Membership & Walks

Types of Walks
Road Walks:
Every 2 weeks throughout the year we organise fairly easy rambles for our members.  These Sunday afternoon walks, normally about 10-12 km and taking 2 to 3 hours, are generally in the West Cork area.  During the summer months we sometimes journey out to walk in the peace and quiet of our local offshore islands.
Intermediate Walks
These walks (IW in the walks programme) are a bit more demanding than road walks, as they comprise a certain percentage of off road. They are aimed at those members who do not have the confidence to go on a hill walk, but would like something a bit more challenging than an easy ramble on the road. We organise approximately 4 of these walks per year.
Once a month the more adventurous members undertake a hillwalk of 3 to 5 hours duration. Hillwalks venture further afield, are longer and more challenging regarding a walker's ability to cope with different terrains. They are mostly off road and require full walking gear.
Avoid turning up for a hill walk only to be turned back because you are not suitably dressed.
If you wish to become a Member of the Sibbereen Walking Group, please fill in the application form. Before you join, you may take part in 3 road walks.
Membership includes Mountaineering Ireland membership, which entitles you to the MI hillwalking insurance cover and the MI mountain log magazines.
We offer the following types of membership for 2018:
Full member:                 €36
Family member:          €32
Associate member:   €10 
(i.e. a member who has full membership already in a different walking group affiliated to MI.)

Walking Gear - A Must

These requirements are aimed mainly at hill walkers. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly and, indeed, it is often very different from where you set out in the morning. It is essentioal to be kitted out for all weather conditions. We therefore recommend:
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Waterproof jacket 
  • Waterproof leggings
  • Walking trousers - (not denim)
  • Warm layers, e.g. T-shirt and fleece
  • Rucksack with shoulder straps.
  • Lunch and plenty of fluids incl. hot drink
